Sometimes people around you come up with amazing ideas that make you smile and say – “that will actually work” or “wow, what a great idea”. Well that is how we feel about NicNat Direct. Our friend Shaun (Owner/Creator of NicnatDirect) set his ship a sail on the east coast with a business that is interesting and that has great legs. We all know that small business is the backbone of the United States economy and good ideas can make for amazing businesses (Pinkberry, Starbucks, Blackberry etc….). We asked a few questions and Shaun was kind enough to answer.

What does your logo represent?  My logo originally came from another business initiative that I wanted to launch in 2000. The business never took off and I became attached to the logo. Don’t laugh but I actually carried it in my wallet for the last 10 years. I consider the character family. To me he represents fun and welcoming. I want everyone that uses NicNatDirect to have a fun and pleasant experience. I also want people from all over the world regardless of race, color, or religion to feel welcomed.

What exactly do you do?  I do two things; a. I allow people living outside of the US to shop online at any US website and have their items delivered directly to their home. b. I ship goods to any part of the world efficiently and at an affordable price.

When I first moved to New York I settled in Fort Greene. There was something about it that was not exactly Toronto, but it made me feel uneasy and comfortable at the same time. Eventually I came to relish where I lived, was encouraged, uplifted, entertained, creatively nourished and challenged by where I lived and amazed by the people that I encountered where I lived. Fort Greene in the 90’s was where America became my home. Enjoy.

‘A Walk Through Fort Greene’ is a historical documentary and a personal essay by co-director Nelson George about a Brooklyn, New York neighborhood that was home base to an extraordinary community of black and Hispanic artists in the ’80s and ’90s.

Ok, so I saw this video (3 weeks ago) - then could not find it (2 days later)  – then someone was going to send it to me (2 weeks ago) - then I found it again (last week). Bottom-line, Nike does it so right sometimes that you have to give them their kudos for being a top marketing dog. The producing credit for this lovely gem goes to Anonymous Content with the directorial credit going to Alejandro Gonzales Innaritu. This commercial is all that and a bag of chips. :)

FIFA World Cup Opening Weekend Images

I love the Lakers and have enjoyed the NBA finals like the next person (Sweet Sixteen Baby!!!). But, I have been keeping an eye on the World Cup in South Africa as well. The World Cup may not hold as much significants in the United States (fan support is growing), but around the world Footbal, Fuotbol, Soccer is the Superbowl, the NBA Finals and the World Series (never quite understood that name) all wrapped into one event. The most played sport in the world has political overtones, cultural exchange and an amazing legacy. These images are a glimpse of Opening Weekend and they tell their own story – without my babble. Enjoy!!

Brought to my attention by my good friend Yvette this afternoon -this video though not the latest breaking news is definitely an amazingly beautiful  feat to witness that was extremely well shot.

World champion freediver Guillaume Nery takes to the water in an attempt to descend into Dean’s Blue Hole – the second deepest blue hole in the world at 202 metres (663 feet) – on a single breath. His death-defying feat which is captured by countrywoman and world champion herself, Julie Gautier on a Canon 5D Mark II, is both visually stunning and frightening at the same time.

Maiden Noir is an amazing new brand that we are introducing to Canvas this week. After buying the brand and being completely impressed with their approach to apparel design (technical yet practical), and distribution(tight), I happened across this video and got drunk off of their kool-aid. Maybe you will see why after viewing.

BMW Art Car by Jeff Koons

The Koons car number, “79”, pays tribute to the 1979 Andy Warhol car. The Warhol car was assigned the number “76,” an homage to the 1976 Frank Stella car, both of which raced at Le Mans. The home of all BMW Art Cars is the BMW Museum in Munich. Starting in September, Koons’ 17th BMW Art Car will be presented there together with some of its predecessors. The car will participate in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in France on June 12 and 13. Read the rest of this entry »
