French Vogue’s October issue, marking its 90th anniversary, will be a vrai whopper, and très collectible, too. Weighing in at 622 pages and with model Lara Stone on the cover, it is slated to hit newsstands around Sept. 20, in time for Milan Fashion Week and a costume ball in Paris on Sept. 30 to celebrate it. As a gift to readers — in France, at least — the issue will come polybagged with a portfolio of oversize photographs from the nine decades, all unbound on thick paper and ready to frame

In 1935, DC Comics founder Major Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson, published New Fun #1, the first comic book with all-new, all-original comic material—at a time when comic books were mere repositories for the cast-offs of the newspaper strips. What was initially considered to be disposable media for children was well on its way to becoming the mythology of our time—the 20th century’s answer to Atlas or Zorro. Over 40,000 comic books later, in honor of the publisher’s 75th Anniversary, TASCHEN has produced the single most comprehensive book on DC Comics in an XL edition even Superman might have trouble lifting.

Herman Leonard . 3.06.23 - 8.16.10

‘I used to tell cats that Herman Leonard did with his camera what we did with our instruments. Looking back across his career, I’m even more certain of the comparison: Herman’s camera tells the truth, and makes it swing. Musicians loved to see him around. No surprise; he made us look good.’ – Quincy Jones

Herman Leonard will always be remembered as one of the greatest jazz photographers in America and he recently passed on August 14, 2010. This summer Canvas was able to exhibit several pieces from Herman’s body of work in our Messengers of Music exhibit, one of which was an image of Miles Davis in Malibu in 1989. The amazing thing about Herman Leonard’s work  is that long before I knew of the man, I knew his work. From the moment my jazz quest began early on in college I stood in wonder and awe of Herman’s image of Sarah Vaughn – NYC, 1950 and Dexter Gordon – NYC , 1948. To me these images are jazz.

Martin Cooper . Inventor of the Cellphone

In 1973, Martin Cooper changed the world, although he didn’t know it yet.

Cooper and his team at Motorola, the communications company, created maybe the only thing that runs the lives of business professionals and teenagers alike — the cell phone.

It was the size of a brick and wasn’t commercially sold for another decade. But as Cooper demonstrated on a New York sidewalk, it worked.

The concept of cellular technology had already been created by Motorola’s rival, AT&T, whose Bell Labs introduced a system allowing calls to be moved from one cell to another while remaining on the same channel. But AT&T was focusing this technology on the car phone.

Cooper wanted people to have freedom to talk on the phone away from their cars. So in reaction, he and Motorola embarked on a project to create a more portable device.

Motorola spent three months building a prototype for a portable, mobile handset that Cooper publicly demonstrated in April of 1973. The company’s first commercial cellular phone, the “DynaTAC,” went on sale 10 years later.

Cooper, now 81, is founder of ArrayComm, a company working to improve cellular networks, smart antenna and wireless communication. He and his wife are also inventors of the Jitterbug, a simplified cell phone geared to senior citizens.

Cooper was surprised when his landline dropped our call. After calling him back on his mobile, we had a chance ask him about the creation of the device that changed the face of communication as we know it.

Here is an edited transcript of our conversation:

Sometimes people around you come up with amazing ideas that make you smile and say – “that will actually work” or “wow, what a great idea”. Well that is how we feel about NicNat Direct. Our friend Shaun (Owner/Creator of NicnatDirect) set his ship a sail on the east coast with a business that is interesting and that has great legs. We all know that small business is the backbone of the United States economy and good ideas can make for amazing businesses (Pinkberry, Starbucks, Blackberry etc….). We asked a few questions and Shaun was kind enough to answer.

What does your logo represent?  My logo originally came from another business initiative that I wanted to launch in 2000. The business never took off and I became attached to the logo. Don’t laugh but I actually carried it in my wallet for the last 10 years. I consider the character family. To me he represents fun and welcoming. I want everyone that uses NicNatDirect to have a fun and pleasant experience. I also want people from all over the world regardless of race, color, or religion to feel welcomed.

What exactly do you do?  I do two things; a. I allow people living outside of the US to shop online at any US website and have their items delivered directly to their home. b. I ship goods to any part of the world efficiently and at an affordable price.
