Growing up in Japan, Daiki Suzuki, the designer behind innovative label Engineered Garments, was fascinated by American sportswear. This interest later motivated Suzuki to learn about the industrial manufacturing techniques commonly employed in America to mass-produce work- and sportswear. Inspired by American military and blue-collar uniforms, denim and sporting apparel ranging from fishing gear to preppy classics,….. Suzuki’s next step was to create a line of clothing that put high-quality fabrics through an assembly line construction process, with added unique finishing touches and details. The result was deconstructed apparel with a rugged feel that was intended to become part of you and somehow translates equally well in the country as it does in the office. If buttons fall off or hems start to fray, Suzuki views such natural wear and tear as a good thing because these clothes are meant to be kept forever and all the imperfections in a piece are what make it truly yours. When Suzuki took his designs to a pattern maker, she remarked that the garments had been engineered, rather than designed, because of the incredible emphasis Suzuki placed on detail — and the label’s name was born.
